Hmmmmm. Interesting debate. Putting the poiltics aside, raised a lot of questions about the role of Arts and Culture in our society. Interesting statistic - Arts accounts for 0.07 per cent of government spending - but accounts for 7 per cent of GDP of the nation. Sounds like a good investment? Interesting question raised - How can any political party justify taxing the poor to pay for subsidies for arts enjoyed only by the rich! They also touched on the patchy nature of music teaching and the lack of resources in schools; and the rules on playing live music in pubs. They also described classical music broadcasting as Niche! Classic FM has more than 5 million listeners. Is that Niche?

Was a lively debate indeed, with excelent contributions from people on the 'shop floor'. Common sense seems to be an early casualty in the lead up to a general election, but if we can really believe the polititians, hopefully the debate will result in live music being disentangled from the licencing laws, and funding for primary/secondary schools music being maintained. Otherwise we'll just plunge back into a 90's nightmare, when music was stripped from the education system and from the spontaneous culture-makers of the day.
