Welcome to the Manchester Camerata Blog

Manchester Camerata is one of the UK's leading Chamber Orchestras with concert series at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and at the Royal Northern College of Music - where we have a residency - but also regularly in Ulverston, Colne, Crewe and Stafford, and across the North West of England and Cumbria. We also have a vibrant education project with a special relationship with schools in Chester. Visit our main website at www.manchestercamerata.co.uk to read more about the orchestra and its plans and projects, for podcasts and vodcasts and to read news from the classical music world.

Three Thinking:2

Hmmmmm. Interesting debate. Putting the poiltics aside, raised a lot of questions about the role of Arts and Culture in our society. Interesting statistic - Arts accounts for 0.07 per cent of government spending - but accounts for 7 per cent of GDP of the nation. Sounds like a good investment? Interesting question raised - How can any political party justify taxing the poor to pay for subsidies for arts enjoyed only by the rich! They also touched on the patchy nature of music teaching and the lack of resources in schools; and the rules on playing live music in pubs. They also described classical music broadcasting as Niche! Classic FM has more than 5 million listeners. Is that Niche?

  1. Was a lively debate indeed, with excelent contributions from people on the 'shop floor'. Common sense seems to be an early casualty in the lead up to a general election, but if we can really believe the polititians, hopefully the debate will result in live music being disentangled from the licencing laws, and funding for primary/secondary schools music being maintained. Otherwise we'll just plunge back into a 90's nightmare, when music was stripped from the education system and from the spontaneous culture-makers of the day.
